, captain mark kelly one of the first witnesses to testified saying loughner was able to squeeze off 33 different rounds in a matter of 15 seconds because of the glock he had with the extended magazine clip and taken down trying to put in a must magazine clip into that weapon. what is your reaction to having had former congresswoman giffords there to open the hearings today. she's lending a powerful voice and draws the emotion to that. do you think her voice will break through to some of those that are more hardened of the idea of new gun reregulations? >> her voice alone would not break through but it's combined with the tragedy in newtown, 26 innocent beautiful people, 20 wonderful children, 6 great educators who very likely would be alive today if america had heeded the call before now for stronger measures against gun violence. her voice is an extraordinary beacon. and mark kelly's admonition that this time must be different, this time must be different, i think also will carry great weight. but most important, we need to seek common ground with responsible gun owners and the second

husband mark kelly, incredibly powerful as well particularly in the moment that he smacked down wayne lapierre. it really is almost stunning what he said right? the whole exchange with dick durbin about what is the point of background checks. dick durbin is like that's the point you moron. >> yeah, and the other important point that i think rebuts that is that we have had now the brady system up and running since the late '90s, and actually 1.5 million gun transactions have been blocked because of the system that is in place, which, again, is a very spotty system in terms of mental health records and states that don't really do a good job of keeping their criminal record but even with those handicaps it still works, and the notion that it just doesn't work -- this is one of the nra talking points. it's just fact rally false, and -- and again obviously, durbin's point that it's a deterrence to people to guy guns is also the obvious counter to that claim. but i come from a more rural part of connecticut, and obviously there are a lot of gun owners out here. backgrou

and with the headlines have been different? that would've made a big difference. say if the guy that mark kelly talked about, he was a hair's breadth from shooting an innocent person. the fact is the guy held both of those people on the ground, the assailant and the innocent person, and kept him from reloading the glock with another 33-round clip. did that make a difference? host: diane is in julian, california, democrat. caller: how are you? i did not hear your question? host: we have been asking have your views changed? caller: the question is, it has strengthened my views on gun control. we know that the president is traveling to minnesota today, where they do have. i do not know all the laws in minnesota. i do have relatives there. the president's agenda is to strengthen the background checks, also, a ban on assault weapons, and improve the mental health care system. i have been in law enforcement many years. the men i have worked around, some have never had to use their service revolvers. we are in a different culture now, a different behavior, a different lifetime. i've been around where there h
